Summer 2015-Occupy TC Newsletter

Happy Summer!

Occupy Traverse City members and friends continue to Meet on the Streetevery Saturday 11am to 1pm, in downtown Traverse City. You can find us with our signs near Horizon Books on Front Street. Stop in for chat!

Labor Day weekend will be action filled!

Pipe Out Paddle and Bridge Walk

These dual actions, flotilla and bridge walk, are calling for the shut down of Enbridge Line 5 oil pipeline which runs under The Straits of Mackinac.

The Line 5 pipelines are 62 years old and run beneath the Straits of Mackinac. The Great Lakes holds 80% of the fresh water in our country, and should not be put at risk of an oil spill! Recently a documentary was released to highlight these risks. In 2014, an animation was made to show what an oil spill at the Straits would look like.

This event is being sponsored by Idle No More MichiganFLOW (For Love of Water), Oil and Water Do Not Mix, Emmet County Recycling, Food and Water Watch, and MiCats (Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands).

Labor Day Bridge Walk

Many individuals and groups take part in the Labor Day Bridge walk

The walk begins at 7:00 a.m., and all walkers MUST start before 11:00 a.m., so arrive early! The walk starts in St. Ignace and ends in Mackinaw City. There is no fee to walk, but there are shuttle buses that can bring you to the start or back to your car after the walk. There is a $5 fee for a bus ride. Bus tickets go on sale at 5:30 a.m. that morning, and buses start transporting walkers at that time.

Note that there are NO SIGNS OR BANNERS ALLOWED ON THE BRIDGE. T-shirts are allowed!

Need a Ride on Labor Day?

David Warren is trying to arrange a bus day trip from Traverse City to Mackinaw City. If the bus is filled, cost would be $15.50 and  you can pay on the bus.

The bus would begin loading at 5:00 AM at Tom's in Acme and leave at 5:30 AM.  It would leave Mackinaw City between 1:00 and 2:00 PM for the return trip.

If interested please RSVP by 8/21 to David Warren via email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call either 231-946-3083 or mobile 231-632-2243. RSVP date may be extended, depending on response. Let’s get enough reservations to make this happen!

NOTE: This bus is being called the “Bernie Bus”, as is it being arranged by Bernie Sanders supporters. However, all are invited and welcome to ride!

Do you ever ask yourself this or do others ask you? Take a moment to read this article.

Why do activists do what they do? "Activists speak up when others are silent and they stand up when others sit down, all the while understanding that what they hope to achieve might not occur...activists are moved, not by the knowledge that they will succeed, but by the feeling of hope that what they do will make the world a better place".
